内容简介:This is a very well presented showcase of five talented marine artists:
Roy Cross, Derek Gardner, John Michael Groves, Geoff Hunt and Mark R. Myers.
As marine painting specialists the combination of meticulous research and imaginative re-creation, combined with superlative technical execution is much in evidence here; these are undoubtedly amongst the finest artists working in the genre today. It's perhaps unfair of me to single out any particular artist from this group, but I am most impressed by Groves, who works mainly in pastel - a difficult medium regardless of subject matter, but handled here with amazing authority and skill; the relatively small-scale of many of the works makes them all the more impressive.
Indeed, much of the work by all five is modestly sized and wonderfully detailed, most especially the watercolours. Myers work in this medium could be taken for oils - he has a real gift for colour and atmosphere.
There are in excess of 140 illustrations in the book; mainly oils and watercolours - and pastel, of course - with a liberal smattering of working and finished drawings. Subjects range from a Viking battle (Groves) to more modern tall ships (Hunt) but the majority are of naval ships, whalers, sea battles etc., as the title implies. The plates are mostly of good size and are supported by texts on each artist. Reproduction quality is excellent.
